Joranda Sadhu Festival

It is the festival of Mahima religion Sadhus (holy men) that fall in month of Feb annually. The festival is located in Joranda near Dhenkanal which is 90 km from Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha.  A unique worship of supreme sadhus’ (who wear only lean tree bark to cover their private part) in their monastery with 12 feet holy fire is considered best way for world peace and harmony.  The Fire stand attracts thousands of visitors and devotee from across the state.

Highlight of the Festivals

It is the festival of Mahima religion Sadhus (holy men) are divided in three groups as below:-

• Gruha Tyagi- (Primary)- Those are students in preliminary stage they meditate and completely dedicate to this religion and remain as the disciple of Supreme sadhus with wearing saffron color and two piece of cotton cloth.

• Kaupani Dhari- (Secondary) – After 12 years of dedication and disciple under  the supreme Sadhu, the  committee decide to promote them  from  primary to Secondary  wearing saffron color very lean cloth tie by organic rope on their waist to cover only the lower private part.

• Bakala Dhari (Supreme) –Aafter 12years of dedication and remaining the disciple under the guidance of the supreme sadhus, the committee decide them to promote secondary to Supreme. The supreme sadhu leaves all the cotton cloth and wear only two pieces of tree bark (locally that tree called “Kumbhi”. Almost all supreme sadhus must mat their hair more than 2 meters long. During festival these Supreme Sadhus are only allowed to worship in the main monastery of infinity with big fire stand

Joranda (Sadhu Monastry) is -25 km from Dhenkanal and 100 km from Bhubaneswar.

Nearest Airport Bhubaneswar– 100 km (2.30hr drive)

Nearest Railway station– Dhenkanal- 25km (45mnt drive), Major Rail head – Cuttack- 75km- (2hr drive)

Photography – Allowed inside Monasteries (except the treasury monastery)
