The highly cultured tropical state of Orissa lies along the northeast coat of India, on the Bay of Bengal. Travel Holidays

Orissa’s coastal plain rise gently inland to the hills of the Eastern Ghats . The state is rich in minerals and is a big exporter of iron ore, but it is often destabilized by natural disasters.

Despite having been a formidable maritime empire, with trading routes stretching to Bali, Sumatra and Jave in Indonesia, the history of Orissa (formerly Kalinga) is a little hazy until the demise of the Kalinga dynasty in 260 B.C. Near modern Bhubaneswar, Kalinga was conquered in a bloody battle by the great Indian emperor Ashoka. Appalled at the carnage, Ashoka forswore valance and converted to Budhism, which he subsequently assisted in spreading to Sri Lanka and East Asia.

Around the 1 st century BC, under the rule of Kharavela, the third Chedi kind, Budhism declined and Jainism was restored as the faith of the people. During this period the monastery caves of udaigiri and khandagiri (near Bhubanesar), were excavated as important jain centers.

By the 7 th century AD Hinduism has supplanted Jainism. Under the kesari and Ganga kings, trade and commerce increased and Orissan culture flourished – countless temples from that classical period still stand today. The orissans defied the muslim rulers in Delhi until finally falling to the Mughals during the 16 th century, when many of Bhubaneswar’s temples were destroyed, since then Orissa has been successively ruled by Afghans, Marathas and the British (from 1803to independence in 1947)
