Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary derive its name to the narrow stretch of River Mahanadi called Sat kosh or seven miles long near Tikarapada and 60 km south of Angul. Here Mahanadi River has cut across the Eastern Ghats.

Satkosia Sanctuary, popularly known as Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary is one of famous wildlife sanctuaries of Odisha (Orissa). The idyllic green sanctuary spans an area of 1331 square kilometers and was established in the year 1976. The entire area is divided into two parts by the River Mahanadi and is situated between the districts of Budh, Angul, Na yagarh and Cuttack.

The sanctuary is valued by wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, scientists and adventure freaks, in a similar manner. The hilly area of Satkosia houses dense groves, moist and dry deciduous forests and vibrant flowers like Khalsi and Genwa. The Gharial Breeding Project is the latest venture of the wildlife reserve and has attracted a lot of attention and contributed to its popularity.
